CHAPTER 12: QUESTIONS
1. Eugene Kennedy in On Becoming a Counselor (p. 14) talks about "how much harm has been done all through history by resolute do-goodersâthat sturdy tribe whose heavy handedness with human beings cannot be compensated for by the virtuous gleam in their eyes. Do-gooders are defined as those persons who act on others in response to their own needs. It is clear, therefore, that doing good is not to be avoided as much as setting out purposefully to inflict good on others at all costs." Do you wish to be a leader so you can do good for others? In what ways do you know when you are doing good rather than inflicting good?
2. Recall some time when someone tried to force some help on you. How did you feel? How did you react?
3. Are you in a helping relationship now? If so, what is your contract? What is the other person's contract?
4. For some helping situation you've experienced in the recent past, what were you trying to get out of it? If possible, recall several situations and see if you can detect a pattern.
5. Think of some person you work with to whom you find it difficult to apply the Golden Rule. What is it in that person that you find hard to care for? How is that same quality manifest in you?
6. Recall a recent occasion when people seemed to be deliberately thwarting your work. Try to imagine how they might have been sincerely attempting to help you, even though the attempt may have been misguided. If possible, speak to the people involved and listen to their version of what they were trying to do.
7. The Platinum Rule says, "Do unto others as they would have you do unto them." How does this compare with the Golden Rule as a practical guide to helping? What if you don't want to do what they want?
